Hearing Aid Maintenance
At Home Maintenance
The life expectancy for most hearing aids is five to seven years – dependent on proper maintenance. Follow-up care is perhaps as important, if not more important, than the hearing aid chosen.
At Mid-Kansas Ear, Nose & Throat, we recommend cleaning everyday using the tools provided with the hearing aid. This just takes a couple of minutes. Brush the entire hearing aid including the microphone and receiver. Scoop any loose wax out of the receiver with the Wax Loop and push any debris out with the Vent Cleaner.
Take care to avoid contact with moisture or other like elements such as lotions or hairspray.
Dogs will chew a hearing aid. Cats like to bat them around. Hearing aids should be kept out of reach of animals and small children.
Battery life varies among different hearing aids. Your battery management will be determined by your needs and use habits. Leaving the battery door open at night slows down the battery drain and also helps to dry up any moisture inside the hearing aid.
Mid-Kansas, Ear, Nose & Throat Comprehensive Maintenance Plan
All hearing aids purchased at Mid-Kansas Ear, Nose & Throat include a comprehensive maintenance plan for 5 years. Every 3-6 months depending on your needs, the patient is invited to come into our office for a cleaning and checkup of the hearing aid. During this appointment, the ear canal is examined for wax, the hearing aid shell is cleaned, a listening check of the aid is done, and the microphone and receiver are examined for debris. We also take this opportunity to visit with each patient to determine if they are continuing to successfully use their hearing aids.
Batteries or the charger are included with our hearing aids while in warranty. This provides the best possible power for the hearing aid thus minimizing repairs and problems.
Repairs needed by the manufacturer outside the warranty will involve additional charges.
