Cochlear Implant Program
Mid-Kansas Ear, Nose & Throat Associates is proud to offer cochlear implants as a treatment option for our patients. A cochlear implant (CI) is a small, surgically implanted device that helps people with moderate to profound hearing loss perceive sound and improves their speech understanding. This is a great treatment option for individuals who no longer perceive a benefit from traditional amplification in the form of hearing aid devices.
How does a cochlear implant work?
A cochlear implant has two parts: an external portion that sits behind the ear and an internal portion that is surgically placed under the skin. The external part has a microphone that picks up sound, a speech processor that organizes the sound, and a transmitter that sends signals to the internal part. The internal part has an electrode that provides stimulation to the auditory nerve, which the brain interprets as sound.
How are cochlear implants different from hearing aids?
A CI bypasses damaged parts of the ear and stimulates the auditory nerve directly, while hearing aids amplify sounds so damaged ears can detect them. Cochlear implants require additional testing and training with your audiologist to help you adjust to a new way of hearing.
How are cochlear implants installed?
An otolaryngologist will surgically place the cochlear implant underneath the skin. The surgery involves minimal drilling in order to reach the cochlea and insert the electrode array near the hearing nerve, then closing the incision. It is an outpatient procedure, so patients often go home the same day.
What are the benefits of cochlear implants?
A CI can give people with moderate to profound hearing loss the ability to improve their speech understanding, especially in noisy environments. In some cases, it can also improve tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Who can benefit from cochlear implants?
Cochlear implants can help people who have moderate to profound hearing loss and feel like they do not obtain adequate benefit with their current hearing aid devices.
Ask our audiologists if you are interested in cochlear implants as a treatment option for your hearing loss.
